Small Business and Social Media Disconnect

OfficeArrow and Social Strategy 1 surveyed small business owners in November 2011 to determine “The State of Social Media in Small Business.” They found that, although most small business owners believed social media impacted their business (88% of respondents), only 63% actually reported using social media for their business.

For those business owners who are using social media, their reasons for doing so include brand awareness (49%), lead generation (33%), customer service (32%) and product ratings/review (17%). For those owners who felt overwhelmed by social media and weren’t using it at all, their reasons listed included that they didn’t have enough staff, didn’t want to share everything, didn’t feel that social media helped their business, were missing leads, felt they couldn’t manage negative commentary or that there was an information overload.

Many businesses have no clearcut roles when it comes to handling social media. Many business owners handle the social media marketing themselves (18%) or hire an outside company (15%). Despite understanding that social media is here to stay, in the next year, 67% of businesses expect to make no changes to how they handle their social media marketing.

Social Sonar understands how difficult it is to run your own small
business and handle multiple social media accounts.  If you are
